John in Chicago sent me a link to The Spotted Pig in Manhattan a few days back, and I finally got a chance to check it out. Wow. A nice looking place with a really interesting menu, plus a website that's very well done.

Hopefully the next time I'm in New York I can head down to the Village and check it out!

What do you look for in a restaurant? There's been a trend in the business over the last few years towards lots of bistros that aren't terribly elegant, but still have a pretty high-priced menu. Do you feel ripped off in a place like that, or is it a relief to be able to have a great meal without having to be uber-dressed up?

Sometimes I dig dressed up, but I have to be in the mood for it. To me, I like walking into a menu oriented restaurant and that way I get the idea that my money is going more into what I'm about to eat, rather than atmosphere.

Scott - ever been to 98 South in historic Chandler? That is the "perfect restaurant/wine bar" to me. It's reasonably priced - and the menu is very creative but not scary (ha ha ha ha)... not so many choices that you can't make up your mind but something for everyone. The waitstaff is friendly, professional and very attentive.

And no, I don't work there. Ha!

Good point, Chris.

Nope, Shell, but it sounds really good! I wonder if Seth at feasting in Phoenix has reviewed it.

This may sound odd, but in addition to good food and a non-dressed-up atmosphere, I like a quiet place. SO many restaurants are so friggin loud that you can't even talk to your pals.
