Update 9/6/07: The Rotal Barby discussion continues here.

Man, a busy morning here at Desert Island Foods™.com, so I'll raid the Inbox for another cruel yet drool-worthy email from Paul, aka Chilebrown:

Tonight we are cooking a 'beer can chicken'. It is on a Weber setup which I cannot begin to praise. You rub it, (Survival Spice), impale it, and forget about it. An hour or so later it is done! I also threw in some home made Bratwurst!

Survival Spice™ is a natural for beer can chicken. Paul didn't send a picture of the finished bird, but Jerry sent a pic of some birds that he did last year that looked absolutely amazing, put your bib on and check out these!

I really dug the grill, so I emailed him for some more info about it:

This is a barbeque that you do not see everyday. It was a Christmas present from Ms. Goofy a couple of years back. I think I only have 12 different rigs. Every one has its place in the barbeque spectrum.

I tried to find a link to the Rotal Barby Co. No luck. They may not be in business anymore. They are located in Scotland. There are two cooking chambers which swing over the bottom chamber which holds charcoal The top lid turns over and can be used as griddle. I tell you, It is unique! You can load up a ton of food in the cooking chambers.

Uh, you better keep an eye on those brats, Chile!!!

Well, I'm glad ol CB is up to something because I'm sure as hell not. Nope. Maybe this weekend?

Me neither, Biggles. I did pick up 4 pounds of bacon today, though. It's a start!

Oscar was wondering if those bratwursts were for him. Not a chance!!!!

Paul, those are some really great looking brats. Got a recipe you're sharing?

I hate to admit,it was a mix from "Hi Mountain Seasoning". I have had very good results with this, and their Buckboard Bacon mix.

This reply is a bit out-of-date but I've only just found your site whilst doing a search for Rotal Barby. This is the best bar-B-Q I have ever seen!! We were at a friend's barby last year when I saw it in use. I found that the company HAS gone out of business. I guess it's because of its unconvential appearance which is a shame because it's a brilliant design and once I'd seen it in action I had to have one. I searched stores over here (Manchester UK) and on the net, and got a gas barby from 100 miles away (I really wanted a charcoal)but it was the only one I could get ANYWHERE. The weather has been too bad since its purchase. I haven't fitted the gas supply bit, and it's without a charcoal pan of course, but I intend to line it well with tin foil. I hope this will work. I've been trying to find a spare charcoal pan from somewhere without success. My Rotal is the larger model and I can't wait to get grilling on it!

Thanks for stopping by, June. Always glad to get good information.

June,

If you want a charcoal pan, I can get hold of one ofr you.

It is so refreshing to hear people are still saying positive things about the barbecue that I designed: Yes you heard right, it was and is my baby. As for the trading status bit, don't write me off completely because when I get the opportunity, I intend to come right back at the market.

Ricahard, As soon as you are back in business, I'll be ordering one. I still have the original Daily Telegraph review for the Rotal Barby from about 30 years ago. It has colour photo of you, a dog and the Rotal
