A Nebraska man has made it his quest to visit every corporate-owned Starbucks in the world, visiting 29 locations in one day.

Rafael Antonio Lozano, now known as Winter, has caught the attention of an aspiring filmmaker named Bill Tangeman, who is filming a documentary of the saga that he hopes to screen at Sundance this year.

Winter has now visited 4,988 of the 5,715 comany stores and has been at it since 1997. He's set up a web site to track his progress. Which I would think would be tough, being that a new Starbucks unit probably opens every 9 seconds, it seems.

Is he nuts? Is he a genius? Is he just wired on caffeine?

Fair Disclosure- the pragmatic chef™ is a Starbucks shareholder but doesn't drink the stuff.

You don't drink Starbucks? Well, I'm sorry. We can't be friends then. No. Don't try to stop me. I'm going to have a Frappuccino and think of better times.

You drink Frappa-whoop-a-mocha-java-ventis! What in the world does that have to do with coffee?

Seriously though (HA!), I'm a coffee purist. I drink regular coffee with a bit of half and half. Two cups every morning and that's it. I just think that Starbucks is a victim of their own success, to my delight, noting the disclosure above.

Common sense dictates that it's far easier to find a thousand pounds of great coffee beans than it is to find a million pounds day in and day out, and I think the quality of Starbucks these days reflects that. I did just buy some of Costco's house coffee for the first time the other day, which is Starbucks rejects, and it's 1/4 the price. I'll break into it in the next few days and let you know what I think.

Let the wounds heal, Ana. Pretty please? With sugar and equal and marchiatto and foam and caramel and vanilla mocha whip on top?

When I lived in Roanoke I worked at Mill Mountain Coffee and Tea. We got our beans green and I roasted them in a huge Italian machine. Well, my roasts kept making huge amounts of smoke and they always ended up seriously dark despite dropping the beans the moment I heard the second pop. My manager--and dear friend--thought I was a ninny until she checked the stack. It turns out that the thing had so much cr@p in it that it was just waiting to catch big old fire.

You were wondering. I know.

So tell us, Stands with a Latte, why do you drink that stuff at Starbucks?

Because I have two small children and they have a drive through. Besides, they'll put whipped cream on just about anything.

Whipped cream on just about anything.

I'll have to start stopping in again, I s'pose.
